Today’s cars are built to last, so having a vehicle with high mileage doesn’t necessarily mean that it is time to get a new one. Although, there is no denying that there is a greater likelihood of issues arising without the proper care.
A high-mileage car is considered any vehicle that has accumulated 75,000 miles or more. Maintaining a car is important for any vehicle, none more so than high-mileage ones. Here is what you can do to keep it running smoothly.
Oil Change
Cars need oil to run properly, so you need to keep an eye on the engine oil level. Give this a check once a fortnight by performing a check with a dipstick. Simply dip into the car engine and remove it again.
Oil levels should be between the minimum and maximum markers and a light yellowly brown colour. Dark or dirty oil should be replaced as soon as possible. The type of oil your car needs depends on whether it has a petrol or diesel engine.
Tyre Check
Tyres are one of your car’s most important safety features, so considerable effort should be taken to check them over weekly. Lumps and bumps can indicate a puncture and under-inflated tyres can increase fuel consumption.
When it is time to have them replaced, you take your car to a garage or buy tyres online for added convenience.
Fluids Check
Car lubricants are essential to the everyday running of a vehicle and failing to replenish them when levels are low can have serious consequences. Aside from engine oil, other lubricants your vehicle needs include coolant, transmission fluid, and brake fluid.
Once again, these should be checked fortnightly and replaced as soon as you realise levels are lower than normal.
Battery Check
It’s normally clear when there are problems with your car battery – namely that it won’t even start. Be sure to keep an eye on the electrolyte levels and drive your car at least once a week to prevent the battery from going flat.
If you know your car will be unused for an extended period, consider using a trickle charge to keep the battery topped up.
